After a satisfying lunch or a heavy meal, dont you crave for something sweet. I do have this craving each and every day. Why not have something healthy. Betel leaves has a lot of health benefits. If you doubt you shall google and see, you will be astonished to see the health benefits of betel leaves. Only with the combination of areca nut it is bound to cause some detrimental effects. Betel leaves were restricted by many parents for their children, atleast in my case by my parents. It aids in good digestion, helps improve respiratory disorders and lot more. So why not inculcate the habit of chewing this wonderful leaf after food, which is so easily available in our country.

The ingredients for making this relish are totally optional. You may get your own choice of ingredients from a paan shop, even I have seen them at mall selling all these stuffs, but as far as possible try to keep it healthy. You may even make the paan stuff and refrigerate them. I have used here dates, fennel, melon seeds, gulkand and honey. Do not skip gulkand and try to get a good quality of gulkand without any preservatives. As a gulkand substitute you may use sugar and few drops of rose essence. Melon seeds are available in the nuts section of departmental stores also known as charmug. You may even skip it if not available.

INGREDIENTS

 nutritional information: Serves 1

1 Betel leaf

1 clove

1/2 tsp fennel

1/2 tsp melon seeds

1 date desseded and chopped

2 tsp gulkand (rose preserve)

1 tsp honey

Method:

 1. Choose a light coloured betel leaf. Darker one has stronger taste, yet good to use. Wash and remove the head and tail part of it. Whenever it begins to spoil the head and tail goes bad at first, so they are always removed.

Use the stuff as required, chew well before swallowing. Adding gulkand and honey gives a nice sweetness like the paan shop ones, yet it is healthy and homemade.
